A regret

I won’t dwell on it, but I just had to write that a major regret I have is not sending more letters and packages to my dad, and then to the rest of my family when I moved away.
I was so self absorbed, my own problems completely engulfed me and I was blind to theirs. Men became my life, my reason for living, and living was misery. Which is why I have a clinging resentment towards men, that I know I need to let go of because I am to blame.

I shirked responsibility towards my family. I pushed them away and thus made myself feel isolated, and so clinged to whatever care came my way, even if it was bad for me and from someone equally as damaged.

But I’ve learnt my lesson and god how its been hurting now I’ve finally let myself miss my family. Now I’ve realised how irreplaceable they are. My dad, my mum, my brother, my sister. They are my world and I’ll never fully understand how I didn’t realise this sooner.

I love them all, I hope they know it. I hope I make up for those years.

”A sweet-looking Japanese girl who, one day, decided to take self-portraits..of herself levitating. She can be spotted in and around Tokyo, equipped with her SLR and her self-timer. When she feels the moment strike, she presses the shutter button down and then, quite literally, “jumps” into place. What I love most about her shots is that they don’t feel forced. Natsumi has a way of making us feel as though she naturally levitates throughout life. When I asked her how others react to her jumping around Tokyo, here is a funny story that she shared. “One day, when I was jumping at a famous sightseeing spot in western Tokyo, workers at a souvenir shop were frightened by how I was jumping. They were whispering things like ‘Is the girl mentally ill’ and ‘Do we need to call the police?’ “So I stopped jumping and apologized to them by saying, ‘I am taking jumping photos for my wedding party’s slide show.’ Their faces turned bright red, and they said things like ‘Oh dear!’ and ‘Congratulations!’ and even ‘Keep jumping!”

This is a cheeky photo of Grimoire in Shibuya. I had to capture a memory of it as it was beautiful, and they were playing lovely Celtic music that reminded me of Ireland! It took us ages to find as it wasnt where it said on google maps and in the end a Japanese guy who was flyering on a busy street took us there!! I bought some tights I had been admiring for months. I’m so glad we found it in the end :)

I call it that because if you put a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will jump right out, but if you put a frog into a pot of room-temperature water and slowly heat it to a boil, the frog will acclimate as it heats and never jump out, eventually boiling to death. Similarly, when we learn as young girls to tolerate “low-level” boundary violations like the ones we often are forced to suffer in silence at school, at home and on the street – bra-snapping, boob-grabbing, ass pinching, catcalling, dick flashing “all in good fun” relentless violations that adults and authorities routinely ignore – it makes it harder for us to notice when even greater boundaries are being violated, eventually leading to the reality that many women who are raped just freeze and fall silent, because that’s what they’ve been taught to do over and over since day one. You tell me what’s more infantilizing: repeatedly letting boys (and grown men) off the hook for their behavior because “boys will be boys” and we can’t ever expect any differently, or creating a consent standard in which all partners take active responsibility for their partner’s safety, and which acknowledges the truly diseased sexual culture we’re soaking in every day.””

I’ve just got back from Ozzfest in Tokyo and saw Tool, the band I have had a deep propinquity with since the age of 15. Their music got me through some shit times. They were the lullabies that rocked me to sleep, the lyrics that kept me going and the advice that helped me stay grounded.

And they were fucking amazing live.
My thanks goes out to the band, but also the amazing crowd in Chiba Tokyo, who somehow amongst the lack of oxygen and the shared sweat, made me feel safe and a part of something bigger than myself.

I’ll never forget this night.
